Novartis, a medical robotics company, acquired motor developers for $115 million

On July 15, 2021, Novartis, a global head medical robot company, announced the acquisition of Schneider Electric motion USA (SEM) for us $115 million. The acquisition is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2021.
SEM focuses on the development of brushless motor technology, integrated motor drive and electronic control. The company was founded in 1986, formerly known as intelligent motion system (IMS). It develops solutions for applications requiring high precision and controlled motion in medical devices, laboratory automation, robotics and other advanced manufacturing applications. Although SEM has been established for nearly 40 years, the company has only 60 employees.
Novartis is an advanced medical device developer famous for its optics and vision. After contacting with next-generation things such as artificial intelligence, Novartis has switched to the field of medical robots.
In 2017, novalta's medical robots officially launched the market, with an annual revenue of US $521 million, up 35% from US $385 million in 2016.
But then, novanta gradually fell into a decline in growth. The annual revenue in 2020 did not reach the expected $600 million, lower than the $614 million in 2018 and $628 million in 2019.
Therefore, Novartis wants to use this acquisition to extend SEM's advanced motion control solutions to automation and robotics applications. Matthijs glastra, chief executive officer and chairman of novanta, said, "the addition of SEM technology will expand our portfolio of precision motion control products and further enhance our ability to provide customers with unique, high-performance solutions."
