The word anesthesia originates from the Greek words "an" and "aesthesis," meaning "loss of sensation." From a medical perspective, anesthesia means temporarily eliminating sensation in a patient, either whole or locally, through medication or other methods, to achieve pain relief and facilitate surgical procedures or other medical examinations and treatments. It can be divided into general anesthesia, local anesthesia, and combined anesthesia.

Epidural anesthesia is the most widely used method in modern clinical practice. Epidural anesthesia refers to epidural space block anesthesia, which involves injecting local anesthetic into the epidural space to block the spinal nerve roots, temporarily paralyzing the area they innervate. This is called epidural space block anesthesia, or simply epidural block. Based on the method of administration, it can be divided into single-dose and continuous methods.

Clinical Applications of Epidural Anesthesia

1. All epidural anesthesia catheter placement procedures;

2. Pregnant women undergoing cesarean section or painless delivery, and those with easily distended veins;

3. Elderly individuals or children, and those with fragile blood vessels;

4. Individuals with coagulation disorders or prone to bleeding;

5. Those undergoing epidural anesthesia for the first time, and those with possible epidural scarring or hyperplasia;

6. Individuals with congenital spinal stenosis, making catheter placement difficult;

7. Individuals requiring long-term indwelling anesthesia catheters, such as those experiencing cancer pain or postoperative analgesia;

8. Individuals with special requirements: such as those undergoing rapid delivery, VIP patients, or those with specific conditions or positions, requiring successful catheter placement on the first attempt and meeting subsequent treatment needs.
